WGSL Equipment List

This is a recommended supply list for WGSL players.  Supplies vary by division.  Please make sure that all items are labeled before taking them to practices or games.

Batting Helmets (All Divisions) - WGSL provides batting helmets in various sizes for all divisions, so purchasing a batting helmet is optional.  Please be aware that our league helmets are shared by other girls.  Players may bring their own batting helmet if there is a concern about sharing helmets.  Players who bring their own helmets have the right to keep other teammates from wearing personally owned batting helmets.  Please be aware that all batting helmets must have a face protector.  This is a league insurance requirement.  Players who bring a helmet without a face protector will be required to wear a WGSL helmet in order to participate.

Fielding Gloves -
Each player in WGSL is required to bring her own glove to practices and games.  For younger players in the Beginners and Rookies Divisions, make sure that your daughter is using the largest size glove that she can grip and close with one hand, 9 1/2 inch glove is the minimum.  It is difficult for a girl to learn to catch an 11 inch softball with any glove that it smaller than the size of the ball. WGSL recommends that older players use a glove that is at least 11 1/2 inches.  Allow your daughter to try on a glove before purchasing.  While larger gloves are recommended, a player should not use a glove that it too large for her to close and grip a softball.

Bats - ASA  and USSA upholds the strictest of standards for bats.  For the safety of our girls, all bats must have the ASA/USSA emblem on the bat.  Please keep this in mind when purchasing bats for your daughter.  Almost all bats sold at Dicks and other retailers possess these emblems.  Baseball bats are not legal for softball use.  WGSL supplies each team with 2 bats.
Beginners Division - 24" and 25" bats are recommended.  Rookies Division - 26" and 27" bats are recommended.
WGSL supplies bats in all divisions.  Purchasing a bat is optional.
Note: Our biggest safety concern is from players swinging bats when unsupervised.  No player is permitted to swing a bat freely at any time during a game or practice, unless she is standing at home plate during a game or during a supervised batting activity or warm-up.

Face-maskFace-masks are becoming more and more standard as the sport evolves, and WGSL recommends that players supply their own masks.  The league will supply at least 3 face-masks for pitchers, 1st and 3rd base fielders. Many girls will choose to wear their own mask regardless of their position in the field.

Cleats - Softball cleats are highly recommended for all divisions.  Sneakers are acceptable in the Beginners Division.  All cleats must be made of plastic or rubber (no metal).

Pants - WGSL recommends gray softball pants.  Other neutral colors (black or white) are also OK.  Younger players may wear shorts when the weather is warmer.  Shorts are not recommended in the older divisions where sliding is common.

Sliding Shorts (optional) - Players starting in the Minors Division might want to consider wearing sliding shorts underneath their uniform pants.

Balls - The Beginners Division uses 11 inch (softie style) softballs.  The Rookies and Minors Divisions use 11 inch standard softballs.  The Majors and Juniors Divisions use 12 inch standard softballs.

Catching Equipment - WGSL provides catching equipment for all divisions starting with Rookies.  Older players, starting in the Minors Division, who are serious about playing the catcher position, might want to consider purchasing their own equipment.
